Where to Find Beautiful Santa Cruz Desktop Wallpapers

A wide Santa Cruz coastline at sunset

If you've ever stood on the cliffs at sunset and wished you could keep that view open all day, a Santa Cruz wallpaper is the next best thing. The California coast makes a wonderful desktop background, but not every ocean photo works well on a screen. Here's what to look for, which local spots make the best images, and how to set one up so it looks sharp.

What makes a good desktop wallpaper

A wallpaper has a different job than a print on a wall. You're staring at it behind a pile of icons and windows, so a few things matter more than usual:

Santa Cruz spots that photograph well

Having shot here for years, these are the places I return to for wallpaper-friendly frames:

  1. West Cliff Drive. Long, curving shoreline with room for sky. Golden hour here is hard to beat, and the lighthouse near Steamer Lane gives you a natural off-center subject.
  2. Natural Bridges State Beach. The sea arch and the tide pools are classic. Low tide plus a pink sunset gives you reflective sand and layered color.
  3. The Boardwalk. The Giant Dipper and the neon at dusk make a fun, colorful option. Shoot from the beach at blue hour for the best glow.
  4. The Santa Cruz Wharf. Long lines of pilings and weathered wood lead the eye across the frame, especially on foggy mornings.
  5. The coast north to Davenport. Wide, empty beaches and bluffs that are perfect for minimal, spacious compositions.

Know your screen resolution

Before downloading anything, check what your display actually needs:

Always choose an image at or above your screen's resolution. It's fine to scale down, but never up. A 4K file will look good on nearly any screen, including Retina Macs.

Put the coast on every screen

My wallpaper collection is a set of 4K California coast photographs, made for desktops and ready to download.

Where to find good wallpapers

There are a few honest options. Free stock sites like Unsplash have plenty of coast photography, though you'll often see the same popular shots. Local photographers sell collections that are curated for screens, and the files are usually consistent in size, color, and style. My own 4K collection above is one such option, shot along this stretch of coast and sized for desktops. And if you take your own photos, you can always crop one to fit your display and make something nobody else has.

How to set one as your background

  1. On a Mac: open System Settings, choose Wallpaper, click Add Photo, and pick your file. Select "Fill Screen" so it doesn't stretch.
  2. On Windows: right-click the image file and choose "Set as desktop background." Then in Settings, Personalization, Background, set the fit to "Fill."
  3. On multiple monitors: set each screen individually, or use a single ultrawide image spanning both.
  4. On a phone: pick a vertical crop and move the subject away from the clock area.

Small tips for a better setup

A good wallpaper should make you feel calmer every time you minimize a window. Whether you download a collection or shoot your own on a walk along the cliffs, pick images with room to breathe. For more coastal frames to inspire your next background, see the photo gallery.
